Specimen & Structure Planting
Specimens form focal points that draw the eye while structural plants are the bones of the garden. Together they make a permanent 3D living framework that provides a setting for more detailed planting.
These are a key part of formal gardens with evergreen clipped standard trees, layered, clipped hedging, and trained forms such as espaliers. They are important in more natural gardens too- like a gnarled old apple tree, a grove of olives or a group of tree ferns in an exotic shaded garden.
